Week 2 Updates

- Group is proceeding to develop for the HTC Vive headset. Previously we were planning on using the Oculus Quest. The Quest is a little tougher to develop on due to pushing builds to headset.

- Group members worked with Vive gear in lab over the weekend and have made progress with particle systems tied to the head tracking and breath signals from OSC device (albeit simulated, see below).

- Have breath detector to Unity connection finally working in game lab. Using Prof’s WiFi router we were able to make reliable connection during Thursday’s lab session. We noticed during our weekend work that the computers in the lab are connected via cable to network. Will have to see if we can connect physical cable to WiFi router, or if there is another solution.

- We worked on the storyboard for our group’s VR experience, discussing how to make a cohesive experience from disparate breath actions (i.e. combining blowing out candles; blowing bubbles; breathing smoke, fire or ice; and playing a musical instrument). Originally, we were thinking that these should be separate scenes, but have been investigating using some sort of “lab” setting as the theme for the experience. This is not without downsides since part of immersion is matching the scene to the activity (e.g. blowing bubbles best done outside, blowing candles best done in a room).

- The first breath experience we are working on is blowing-out candles. Blowing out candles presents research possibilities. After getting the user immersed in simply blowing out candles, we can present some weird scenarios to see how they react. We can investigate things like delaying action or amplifying/muting action.

- Utilizing the principle of “Division of Labor” we hived off into two groups with one focused on the candle and another centered upon infrastructure. Our aim is to abstract the backend infrastructure to facilitate rapid prototyping. Hopefully we will meet in the middle where we transfer the force from the breath to a realistically performing candle object.

- Administratively, our group has set itself up to use Unity Collaborate. We also created a group treasury spreadsheet to track shared expenditures with Pizza as the first expense.
